About MichiStops
The English map of Japan's roadside stations
Michi-no-eki are one of the best-kept secrets of driving in Japan — and until now, almost entirely in Japanese. MichiStops maps every one of them in English so you can travel with confidence.
Michi-no-eki 101
What is a michi-no-eki?
Michi-no-eki (道の駅, literally “road stations”) are government-designated rest areas built along Japan's roads — more than 1,100 of them, in every corner of the country. Each one is registered with Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and must offer free parking and around-the-clock restrooms.
But they are far more than rest stops. Most double as a showcase for the surrounding region: farmers markets piled with same-morning produce, restaurants serving the local specialty, hot-spring baths, craft shops and tourist information. For anyone exploring Japan by car or campervan, they are the single most useful — and most rewarding — place to stop.
- 🅿️Free parking
Every station has a free car park, open around the clock.
- 🚻24h restrooms
Clean, free toilets available 24 hours — perfect for long drives.
- 🥬Farmers markets
Fresh local produce and regional specialties, often same-morning picked.
- 🍜Local food
Restaurants and food stalls serving the area's signature dishes.
- ♨️Onsen hot springs
Many stations have an on-site onsen or public bath to relax.
- 🔌EV charging
A growing number offer EV chargers along your route.

Trust & data
Data & independence
MichiStops is an independent guide. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), or the official Michi-no-Eki network.
Station data is derived from “国土数値情報(道の駅データ)” (National Land Numerical Information, MLIT, Japan) and processed by MichiStops, with English names and facility details added by us. Facilities and opening hours can change — always check the official station page before you visit.
