Koyasan & Ryujin Onsen Drive: Osaka to the Sacred Kii Mountains by Car
Drive south from Osaka to Koyasan — Japan’s great Buddhist mountain and temple-lodging town — then over the Koya–Ryujin Skyline to Ryujin Onsen, one of Japan’s three “beauty” hot springs. 4 michi-no-eki linking Osaka and the Kii mountains.
Most visitors reach Koyasan by train and cable car and never see the mountains around it. With a rental car from Osaka — where most Kansai trips begin — the sacred heart of the Kii Peninsula opens into a two-day drive: up through the persimmon villages to Koyasan itself, then along one of Japan’s great ridge roads to a hot-spring valley almost no foreign visitor reaches.
The route climbs south out of Osaka through Kawachinagano and the persimmon country of Kudoyama — gateway to the Choishi-michi pilgrimage trail and the exile home of the samurai Sanada Yukimura — before winding up to Koyasan, the 1,200-year-old temple town founded by Kobo Daishi, with its lantern-lit Okunoin cemetery and overnight temple lodgings. From there the Koya–Ryujin Skyline runs the high forest ridge past the Gomadanzan viewpoint — near the highest point in Wakayama — and drops to Ryujin Onsen, a riverside hot spring counted among Japan’s finest for the skin.

- Book a shukubo (temple lodging) on Koyasan a month or two ahead — a night with the monks, dawn prayers and shojin-ryori vegetarian cuisine is the highlight of the drive.
- The Koya–Ryujin Skyline is spectacular in late-October foliage but can close for snow and ice from December to February — check road conditions before a winter run.
- Kudoyama is persimmon country: the roadside station sells fresh kaki and dried hoshigaki in autumn, plus Sanada Yukimura souvenirs from his exile years here.
