Southern Hokkaido Loop: Hakodate, Matsumae Castle & Onuma
A 2-day loop from Hakodate around the southern Oshima Peninsula: the Shinkansen town of Kikonai, Hokkaido’s only castle at Matsumae, the herring port of Esashi and the mirror lakes of Onuma — 5 michi-no-eki on Hokkaido’s oldest-settled coast.
The Oshima Peninsula is the tail of Hokkaido that reaches south toward Honshu — the first part of the island the Japanese settled, and the only place on Hokkaido with a feudal castle. Most visitors stop in Hakodate for the night view and move on, but the peninsula south and west of the city is a quiet two-day loop of castle towns, Edo-era herring ports and one of Hokkaido’s most photographed lakes, all an easy drive from the Shinkansen terminus.
This loop runs south-west out of Hakodate to Kikonai, the Hokkaido gateway of the Shinkansen, then down to Matsumae, whose reconstructed castle stands in a park of some ten thousand cherry trees that bloom in a long relay from late April. From the peninsula’s tip the road turns up the Sea of Japan coast through Kaminokuni to Esashi — a preserved Edo-period herring town facing Kamome (Seagull) Island — before cutting back east to Onuma Quasi-National Park, where island-dotted lakes mirror the cone of Mt Komagatake. The michi-no-eki here trade in the coast’s squid and herring and the peninsula’s early-season Hokkaido vegetables.

- Matsumae Park is Hokkaido’s cherry-blossom capital — roughly ten thousand trees of 250 varieties bloom in relay from late April into mid-May, weeks after Honshu; it is the single best reason to time this loop for spring.
- Onuma Quasi-National Park is a short detour off the Hakodate–Sapporo highway; the flat lakeshore path and island bridges give the classic reflected-Komagatake shot, best in early-morning stillness.
- Esashi keeps its Edo-era merchant streets from the herring boom and a full-size replica of the shogunate warship Kaiyo Maru; its Ubagami Daijingu festival in early August is one of Hokkaido’s oldest.
