Hokkaido Onsen Loop: Lakes, Volcanoes & Hot-Spring Towns
A 2–3 day Hokkaido road trip from New Chitose Airport: Lake Shikotsu, Niseko, Lake Toya and Noboribetsu onsen, linked by 8 michi-no-eki roadside stations.
This is the classic first-timer Hokkaido drive: a loop from New Chitose Airport around Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya, past the ski fields of Rusutsu and Niseko, and back along the coast through Noboribetsu — Japan’s most famous hot-spring town. Distances are short by Hokkaido standards, roads are wide and quiet, and there’s a michi-no-eki with local food roughly every 40 minutes.
The loop works in either direction. Going counter-clockwise (Chitose → Rusutsu → Niseko → Lake Toya → Noboribetsu) keeps the best onsen for your final nights: soak at Toyako or Noboribetsu after the mountain roads are behind you. Every stop below has free parking and 24-hour restrooms, so the route also suits campervans.

- Rent the car at New Chitose Airport, not central Sapporo — you skip city traffic entirely.
- Lake Toya’s lakeside michi-no-eki area has evening fireworks from late April to October.
- Fill the tank around Chitose or Date; stations in the Niseko hills are sparse.
- In winter this loop needs studless tires and snow-driving experience — consider it a green-season route.
