This quiet inland corner of Iwate is Japan's storybook country. It raised Miyazawa Kenji — poet of "Night on the Galaxy Railroad" — and it is the setting of the Tōno monogatari, the folk tales of kappa water-sprites, guardian horses and mountain gods collected a century ago. The roads run through rice valleys and low green mountains between the two.
The drive goes from Ishidoriya, town of the Nanbu master brewers, through Tōwa with its Kenji fairy-tale village and Ihatov museum, past the Miyamori arch bridge said to have inspired the Galaxy Railway, to Tōno itself — the Denshōen folk park, the kappa pool and the five hundred rakan stone carvings.
