West of Aomori, the Tsugaru plain spreads out under the perfect cone of Mt. Iwaki, "Tsugaru Fuji." It is apple country and the home of Hirosaki, a castle town famous for the finest cherry blossom in northern Japan and for the great illuminated floats of the Neputa festival.
The drive comes down from Namioka — castle ruins and an apple hill — through Inakadate, where whole rice paddies are planted as giant living artworks each summer, to Hirosaki with its castle, cherry park and Neputa hall, and on to the hot springs of Ikarigaseki in the southern hills.
