Shakotan Blue Drive: Otaru, Cape Kamui & the Sea of Japan Coast
A day or two out of Sapporo along Hokkaido’s clearest coast: the whisky town of Yoichi, the turquoise capes of the Shakotan Peninsula and the Raiden shore to Iwanai — 4 michi-no-eki on the Sea of Japan.
“Shakotan Blue” is the name Hokkaido gives the colour of the sea off the Shakotan Peninsula — a clear cobalt-to-turquoise you find nowhere else on the island. The peninsula juts into the Sea of Japan west of Otaru: a coast of sheer capes, fishing coves and sea urchin so good people drive out for a single bowl of it. With a rental car it is an easy day or two out of Sapporo.
This loop runs west from the canal town of Otaru through Yoichi — the seaside town where Nikka whisky was founded — out onto the peninsula for the cliff-top viewpoints at Cape Kamui and the Shimamui coast, then down the Sea of Japan shore through the fishing village of Kamoenai and the Raiden cliffs to Iwanai, before turning inland through the caldera-basin village of Akaigawa back toward Otaru. The michi-no-eki here trade in the coast’s catch and the region’s famous fruit — Yoichi cherries, apples and wine.

- Sea-urchin (uni) season runs June–August — the villages around Shakotan serve fresh uni-don straight off the boats, the single best reason to time the drive for early summer.
- Cape Kamui is a 20–30 minute walk out along the cliff ridge (the Charenka-no-Michi path) from the car park; go on a calm, bright day for the full Shakotan Blue, and check the path is open — it closes in high wind.
- The Nikka Whisky distillery in Yoichi, beside Michi-no-Eki Supeesu Appuru Yoichi, runs free self-guided tours and tastings — an easy first stop out of Otaru.
- The exposed peninsula road (Route 229) closes in winter storms and the sea greys over, so June–October is the season for the colour; fuel up in Yoichi or Iwanai, as stations are sparse on the coast.
