Okhotsk Coast Drive: Monbetsu, Lake Saroma & the Drift-Ice Sea
Hokkaido's Okhotsk shore, where the sea itself freezes in winter — from the drift-ice port of Monbetsu down past Lake Saroma, Japan's largest lagoon, to the hot-spring town of Onneyu. Capes, tulip fields and a drift-ice icebreaker. 6 michi-no-eki.
This is the coast the sea freezes against. In late winter, pack ice drifts down from the Amur and locks the Okhotsk shore in white, and the icebreaker Garinko sails out of Monbetsu straight into it. The rest of the year the same coast is capes, lagoons and flower fields, with almost no traffic.
The drive runs down the Okhotsk coast from Ōmu and Okoppe — with the Cape Hinode sunrise point — through Monbetsu, home of the drift-ice museum and the icebreaker, and the tulip fields of Yūbetsu, along Lake Saroma, Japan's largest brackish lagoon and a famous sunset, then inland to the hot-spring town of Onneyu with its all-season aquarium.
