The wide, empty Sea-of-Japan run up Hokkaido's northwest coast — the Ororon Line from Rumoi past herring mansions, a clifftop observatory and the Sarobetsu wetlands to Wakkanai and Cape Sōya, Japan's northernmost point. 6 michi-no-eki.
The Ororon Line is one of Japan's great empty-road drives: a near-straight ribbon of coast highway running north from Rumoi along the Sea of Japan, with the islands of Rishiri and Rebun floating offshore and rows of white wind turbines turning over the dunes. Traffic thins, the sky opens, and every headland has a michi-no-eki with a hot spring or a sunset deck.
The route climbs from Rumoi through the old herring port of Obira and Haboro — the ferry gateway to the seabird islands of Teuri and Yagishiri — past the clifftop observatory at Shosanbetsu and the Sarobetsu wetlands, to Teshio and finally Wakkanai, the northern tip, with Cape Noshappu, Cape Sōya and the ferries to Rishiri and Rebun.
