Inland Kyushu is where Japan keeps its creation myth. The ravine at Takachiho — where legend says the sun goddess Amaterasu hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness — sits at the head of a highland corridor that runs west into the Aso caldera, one of the largest on earth, and north into the volcanic pastureland of Oita. The trains barely reach any of it, which is exactly why it makes such a good drive.
This route climbs up from the Miyazaki coast at Nobeoka, through the Gokase river gorge to Takachiho and its rowboat-only ravine, then crosses west onto the floor of the Aso caldera — a live volcano ringed by a wall of green mountains — before dropping into the Oita highlands past the spring-water castle town of Taketa to the wide curtain of Harajiri Falls. Every michi-no-eki here doubles as a farm market for highland Bungo beef, mountain spring water and Takachiho’s prized shiitake.

- Take the Takachiho Gorge rowboat first thing — the 30-minute rental slots below Manai Falls sell out by mid-morning in season, and the ravine is emptiest right at opening.
- Amano-Iwato Shrine and its riverside cave Amano-Yasugawara are a short detour from Takachiho; the town’s all-night yokagura myth-dances run at farmhouses and shrines through the winter.
- Check the Mt Aso crater status before you go — the Nakadake rim closes when volcanic-gas levels rise, but the caldera-floor roads and the Kusasenri grassland stay open either way.
- Fill the tank in Takachiho or Aso before the highland stretches, and allow for slow, winding mountain roads — this is a comfortable two-day drive rather than a one-day loop.
