Tokachi is Hokkaido’s breadbasket — a plain the size of a small country, ringed by mountains and quilted with bean, wheat and dairy farms under an enormous sky. It is also the heart of the “Hokkaido Garden Path,” a string of designed gardens — the Tokachi Millennium Forest, Manabe Garden, Rokka-no-Mori — that draw on the plain’s cool summers and long light. Obihiro, the flat, easy-to-drive capital, is the base, and a rental car is the only sensible way to link the gardens, ranches and lakes that lie scattered across the farmland.
This route runs south from Obihiro to the art-and-garden village of Nakasatsunai and the wide farm roads of Sarabetsu, then north through Obihiro and the moor-spring resort of Tokachigawa at Otofuke, up onto the Shihoro highlands toward the Naitai Highland Farm — Japan’s largest public ranch, where a hilltop terrace café looks out over the whole Tokachi plain — and on to Shikaoi and Urimaku at the foot of Lake Shikaribetsu, Hokkaido’s highest lake. - The Naitai Highland Farm terrace café (above Shihoro / Kamishihoro) is the signature stop — a free drive up into the ranch for a sweeping terrace view over the Tokachi plain; it opens roughly late April to mid-October and is best in clear morning light.
- Lake Shikaribetsu, reached past Shikaoi and Urimaku, is Hokkaido’s highest lake with a lakeside onsen; in the depths of winter its shore hosts the Kotan ice village, but the drive up is a green-season one.
- Space the gardens out: Rokka-no-Mori at Nakasatsunai (the Rokkatei confectioner’s forest park, free) and the Tokachi Millennium Forest and Manabe Garden near Obihiro are the pick if you are not garden-hopping the whole path.
- Distances between stops are short and the roads are wide and flat — an easy first Hokkaido drive — but fill up in Obihiro before the Shihoro and Shikaribetsu highlands, where stations are sparse.
