This corner of southwest Hokkaido is one long geology lesson made beautiful: the perfect cone of Mt. Yōtei ("Ezo Fuji") fed by ice-cold springs, the round caldera lake of Tōya with its summer-long fireworks, and the still-steaming lava dome of Shōwa-Shinzan that pushed up out of a wheat field in the 1940s. Most of it is a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The drive comes down from the spring-water village at the foot of Mt. Yōtei over the Nakayama Pass — famous for its fried potato and Yōtei views — through the Ōtaki hot-spring country to Lake Tōya and Sōbetsu, at the foot of Shōwa-Shinzan and Mt. Usu, then out to the sea at Muroran, with its white suspension bridge, Cape Chikyū and factory-and-cape night views.
