Arima has a train, but the satoyama around it barely does — a rental car is what turns it into one easy loop from Osaka.
Everyone rides the ropeway up to Arima Onsen; almost no one drives the countryside behind it. Yet the range of hills that walls Kobe off from its rural back-country — Kita-ku, Sanda, Miki and the Banshu plain beyond — is barely twenty minutes off the expressway, and it hides thatched post towns, four-hundred-year-old blacksmith workshops, one of Japan’s oldest silver mines and the exact geographic centre of the country. Arima itself is easy to reach by rail, but the villages that ring it are not, so the drive up and over Mt Rokko is what strings them into a single quiet loop you can do in a day or two from Osaka.
From Osaka the route slips north into the Inagawa valley — the old Tada silver-and-copper mine country — then crosses toward Arima, where the iron-rich golden “kinsen” and clear “ginsen” waters have drawn bathers since the seventh century and the Rokko–Arima ropeway climbs to one of Japan’s most famous night views over Kobe and Osaka Bay. Turning west it drops through Ogo, an old Arima Kaido post town of thatched farmhouses, to Miki, where smiths have forged saws and chisels for four centuries, then up to Nishiwaki — signposted as the “navel of Japan,” where the 135th meridian crosses the 35th parallel — before the easy run back past Kato to the expressway home. The michi-no-eki along the way are the district’s pantry: Sanda’s prized beef and rice, Kita-Kobe vegetables and soba, and Banshu textiles and sake.
