Tajima is the mountainous inland of Hyōgo, north of Himeji and Kobe: a country of highland plateaus, hot-spring towns and one of Japan's most photographed ruins — Takeda Castle, whose stone walls stand on a ridge that on autumn mornings floats above a sea of cloud.
The drive comes down from the Kannabe highlands, through the hot springs of Yabu, to the Wadayama gateway of Takeda Castle and the Asago valley, with the old Ikuno Silver Mine and the striking ruins of the Kanagabata ore-dressing plant, "the Machu Picchu of Japan."
