Tome & the Kitakami River: Meiji Schoolhouses, Wintering Geese and an Onsen Stop
A 2-day drive down the Kitakami River through Tome in northern Miyagi: Meiji-era schoolhouses, the marshland where tens of thousands of wild geese winter, and an onsen roadside station at Ishinomaki — 5 michi-no-eki in all.
Most drivers cross northern Miyagi on the expressway in forty minutes and see nothing. The old road down the Kitakami River goes through Tome instead — a town of wide rice plains, canals and the best-preserved Meiji public buildings in the Tohoku region. The former Toyoma school and courthouse are kept as a small museum quarter and are the reason the district is nicknamed Miyagi's Meiji village.
North of the route lie Izunuma and Uchinuma, shallow marshes listed under the Ramsar Convention, where tens of thousands of white-fronted geese and whooper swans spend the winter — from late October the dawn and dusk flights are the single most striking thing on this drive. The road then follows the river south through Yoneyama and Tsuyama to Ishinomaki, where the last roadside station has its own hot spring, so the soak comes at the end rather than the middle.

Route tips
- For the geese, be at the marshes at first light or an hour before sunset — that is when the flocks move; the middle of the day is quiet.
- The Meiji schoolhouse quarter in Toyoma is compact and walkable, but it keeps museum hours — aim for the morning rather than late afternoon.
- Johin-no-Sato at Ishinomaki has an onsen and a large farm market; it works as the last stop before the expressway back to Sendai.
- Winter here is cold but the plains stay largely snow-free compared with the mountains inland — still, carry snow tyres from December.
