The Mogami is one of Japan's three great rapids, and it carries you across northern Yamagata from the Shōnai coastal plain — one of Japan's rice bowls — up into the mountains. It ends at Ginzan Onsen, the old silver-mine hot spring whose wooden ryokan and gas lamps along a snowy river look straight out of a Taishō-era postcard.
The drive crosses the Shōnai plain at Shōnai and Mikawa, with its cedar "forest of fantasy," then follows the river through the Mogami gorge at Tozawa — where flat-bottomed boats run the rapids to a boatman's song — to Obanazawa, gateway to Ginzan Onsen and a town Bashō once passed through.
