Niigata is Japan’s rice bowl and its sake heartland, strung along 300 km of Sea of Japan coastline between the Northern Alps and the Sado ferry. The coast road runs the whole length, from the sheer Oyashirazu cliffs in the south — once the most feared stretch of the old highway — to the sculpted rock shore of Sasagawa Nagare in the north.
This drive follows that coast from Itoigawa, a UNESCO Global Geopark famous for jade, north through the fishing ports of Noh and Nadachi, the sunset town of Izumozaki, and Niigata city, ending at the clear-water coves and wind-carved rocks of Sasagawa Nagare near Murakami. The michi-no-eki are stacked with the region’s pride — Koshihikari rice, sake, snow crab in winter and some of the best seafood on the Sea of Japan.
