Shimabara to Amakusa: Kyushu’s Volcano Coast & Island-Hopping Ferry Drive
Drive from Kumamoto across the Amakusa Five Bridges to the island churches and dolphin coast of the Amakusa Islands, then take the ferry to the Shimabara Peninsula beneath Mt Unzen — 5 michi-no-eki linking Kumamoto and Nagasaki.
Amakusa is a chain of islands off the west coast of Kumamoto, joined to the mainland by a famous run of five bridges — the Amakusa Gokyo — that hop from islet to islet across the Yatsushiro Sea. It is one of Kyushu’s great coastal drives: wild bottlenose dolphins are resident year-round, the coves are among the clearest water in Kyushu, and the hidden-Christian village of Sakitsu, where farmers kept their faith in secret for two centuries, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No train ever reached these islands, so a car — and one short ferry — is the only way to string them together.
This route runs west out of Kumamoto, an easy handoff from the Aso caldera drive, across the Uto Peninsula and over the Five Bridges onto Amakusa, down past the dolphin coast to the fishing town of Ushibuka and the World Heritage church at Sakitsu, then boards the short car ferry from Oniike across to the Shimabara Peninsula. Shimabara is dominated by Mt Unzen, the volcano whose 1990s eruption buried whole neighbourhoods; the michi-no-eki at Fukae is built around houses left half-submerged in the debris flow as a memorial. The drive ends in the spring-water castle town of Shimabara and the old hot-spring resort of Unzen Onsen.

- Book a wild-dolphin cruise off the Amakusa coast — resident bottlenose pods are seen on the large majority of sailings, an easy add-on near Kamiamakusa Sanpaaru or Ariake.
- Time the Oniike–Kuchinotsu car ferry (about 30 minutes) — it saves a long backtrack and is far more scenic than driving around; arrive early on summer weekends, as car space is limited.
- Sakitsu Church and its fishing village on southern Amakusa are the World Heritage highlight — a worthwhile spur south past Ushibuka before you catch the ferry.
- On the Shimabara side, Mizunashi Honjin Fukae preserves houses buried by Mt Unzen’s 1991 debris flow; check current Fugendake volcanic status, and fill the tank in Amakusa or Shimabara, as coastal stations are spread out.
