Nagasaki is where Japan first met the wider world — and then spent two centuries hiding it. Portuguese and Dutch ships made Hirado and Nagasaki the country’s only windows on foreign trade in the 1500s and 1600s, and when Christianity was banned, the fishing villages of this coast kept the faith in secret for seven generations. Their churches and hamlets are now a UNESCO World Heritage group, and almost none of it is on a rail line — the coast road north-west from Nagasaki to Hirado is how you actually see it.
This route leaves Nagasaki along the Sotome shore, where the sunset viewpoint and the stone churches of Shitsu and Ono mark the hidden-Christian heartland, then crosses the Saikai bridges toward Sasebo and the ninety-nine wooded islets of Kujukushima. From there it runs out to Hirado — Japan’s first foreign trading post, with its reconstructed castle and Dutch-era waterfront — and over the long white arch of the Ikitsuki bridge to the wild cliff coast beyond, before turning back east to the horse-mackerel port of Matsuura. The michi-no-eki here trade in the day’s catch, Hirado beef and the islands’ produce.

- The Sotome coast (Shitsu and Ono churches, the Endo Shusaku literary museum and the Yuhi-ga-oka sunset roadside station) is the hidden-Christian highlight and the reason to start early — the light off the sea is best in the late afternoon on the drive back.
- For Kujukushima, take the short sightseeing boat from Pearl Sea Resort near Sasebo, or drive up to the Tenkaiho and Ishidake viewpoints for the classic island-studded panorama; Huis Ten Bosch is an easy add-on if you are travelling with children.
- Cross the Ikitsuki bridge (toll-free) onto Ikitsuki Island for the Shiodawara cliffs and the Sunset Way coast road — the most dramatic scenery on the route and a former hidden-Christian stronghold.
- Hirado and the outer islands are open year-round but exposed to the East China Sea; spring and autumn give the calmest crossings and clearest views — fuel up in Sasebo or Hirado, as coastal stations thin out toward Ikitsuki.
