Barely two hours up the expressway from the city, the Oku-Kuji hills fold into river gorges, cypress valleys and hot-spring towns that almost no foreign visitor reaches — because the trains don’t go there. The drive climbs north from Mito up the Kuji River, threading soba villages and river viewpoints to Fukuroda Falls — a 120-metre cascade ranked among Japan’s three greatest waterfalls, which turns to flame-coloured maples every November and freezes into a wall of ice in the coldest weeks of winter. From the falls the road swings east to the Ryujin Gorge and its 375-metre suspension bridge, then drops back down to the Pacific at Hitachi, where the seafood markets sit a short drive from Hitachi Seaside Park and its hills of blue nemophila in spring and scarlet kochia in autumn.

- Fukuroda Falls is a genuine four-season sight: fresh green and thundering after the rains, blazing maple in November, floodlit on winter evenings, and — in a hard January or February — frozen into a wall of ice that draws climbers. The station at Oku-Kuji Daigo has its own onsen to thaw out in afterward.
- The Ryujin Big Suspension Bridge is 375 m long — one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Japan — and hangs 100 m above the gorge; it runs one of the country’s highest bungee jumps, flies hundreds of koinobori carp streamers over the valley around Golden Week, and is at its best over the red maples in early November.
- Time the coast for the flowers: Hitachi Seaside Park, just south of the finish, turns sky-blue with millions of nemophila from late April to mid-May and deep red with kochia bushes in mid-October. Either way, finish at the Hitachi seafood market and eat the day’s catch grilled at the counter.
- This is Oku-Kuji soba country — the mountain buckwheat is the local specialty and the michi-no-eki restaurants serve it fresh. Fill the tank in Hitachiomiya or Daigo before the northern hills, and note that the gorge side roads can ice up between December and March.
